Real Salt Lake announced a trade Friday to send three-year veteran Carey Talley to L.A. -based Chivas USA in exchange for a conditional second round selection in the 2010 or 2011 MLS SuperDraft.
The trade came just hours before Talley was set to suit up for RSL's battle with conference leading FC Dallas, a game Real eventually won, 2-1, thanks to a Kyle Beckerman shot in the 73rd minute.
"We are fortunate to have had Carey [Talley] provide tremendous veteran leadership to some very young teams during his tenure with RSL and wish him all the best with Chivas USA," RSL general manager Garth Lagerway said in a news release.
The move will give 31-year-old Talley his fifth team in 11 seasons with Major League Soccer. His rookie year was spent playing with D.C. United, where he helped the team to the 1999 MLS Cup championship, followed by stints in Kansas City and Dallas before settling down in Salt Lake in 2005. Talley started 58 games with RSL, playing over 5,000 minutes during the squad's early years while racking up six goals and nine assists.
RSL coach Jason Kreis was pleased with the transaction, despite what it means to his young, shifting squad this season.
"I think it was a win-win-win," Kreis said after the FC Dallas game. "It was not a decision to make us better right now, but in the long term I think it was a good decision for this club. It was a good thing for Carey Talley because I think it's going to extend his career a little bit and gets him into a fresh place. And it was a good decision for Chivas because they picked up a veteran and leader who I think is a very smart soccer player and a very good one. I think everybody wins in this one."
Chivas USA is just as excited as Kreis with their end of the deal.
"Carey is an experienced, consistent defender who can play both in the middle and on the outside," Chivas USA coach Preki said Friday."We're glad he's joined the squad and think he'll be a good fit for us as we move forward."
The transaction came at the perfect time for the goats, as defender Dan Gargan retired from professional soccer, a move described by the organization is "for personal reasons only." The same day, Chivas announced their decision to waive defender Chris Pozniak, the Canadian international who started strong with Toronto FC, then fizzled through a term with the San Jose Earthquakes before being acquired this year by the goats, where he started three games.
