The 2001 Summer term and Fall Semester programs at the BYU Jerusalem Center have been cancelled, said Carri Jenkins, assistant to the President over university communications
"With tensions in the Middle East remaining high, we determined it would be best to cancel all our programs through the end of this year," said J.R. Kearl, assistant to the president of the Jerusalem Center, according to a news release.
About 300 students attend the spring and summer terms, and about 175 attend during the Fall semester.
Faculty and students were contacted about the cancellation Tuesday and Wednesday.
Jenkins said Faculty who were supposed to go to Jerusalem have been given other assignments and BYU faculty will stay on campus.
She said students have always been told to have a backup plan, that they should register for classes and obtain housing.
BYU also cancelled the Winter and Spring 2001 programs.
Jenkins said that was the first time BYU had to cancel the Jerusalem Center program since the winter of 1991, during the Persian Gulf War.
