Elder Robert D. Hales

Using the examples of the brother of Jared, the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Savior Jesus Christ, Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles counseled members during the Saturday morning session to prepare for the future.

Elder Hales explained that leaders and parents should take initiative for themselves and for the welfare of their families.

"Like the brother of Jared," he said, "we must make a plan and then take it to the Lord.

"We must carefully consider the needs of our family members, make a plan to meet those needs and then take our plan to the Lord in prayer."

Elder Hales reminded the audience of prophets' counsel to put their lives in order - to pay tithing, eliminate debt, store food, obtain an education and live the commandments.

He said when our children and grandchildren look to us for answers and hope, they should "hear us speak faithfully and hopefully, despite the tribulation of our times."

"As they see our steadfastness in keeping the commandments, their fear will subside and their confidence in the Lord will increase," he said.

Elder Hales said tests of our faith are priceless opportunities to discover how much God cares for us, Elder Hales said.

"They need to see us continuing to pray, to study the scriptures together and to hold family home evening and family councils, to serve faithfully in our church callings, to attend the temple regularly and to be obedient.
