The Utah House of Representatives unanimously approved House Bill 219 on Thursday Feb. 20, which would ensure minimum wage to tipped employees.
The bill relates to the current Utah minimum wage of $2.13 per hour for tipped employees such as restaurant servers, and requires employers to pay additional wages if the tipped employee doesn't receive at least minimum wage in tips plus hourly wages.
If employees make less than the Utah minimum wage, employers would be required to pay the difference under H.B. 219.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. David Ure, R-Kamas, will proceed to the Senate for further consideration.
