Members of the Church often suffer needlessly because they do not open their hearts to the Lord, said Elder Richard G. Scott in the Sunday afternoon session of General Conference.

Elder Scott said this suffering can happen as a result of our own choices or as a result of the choices of others.

"Do you find yourself in a similar circumstance? Does there seem to be an oppressive, crushing weight that is always there?" asked Elder Scott.

Repentance and forgiveness will end our needless suffering, and Elder Scott outlined the process for both.

"Seek out your bishop," said Elder Scott. "He will show you how to repent and will help you do it."

The allures and temptations are often false promises which lead us into compromising situations, said Elder Scott.

"His objective is enslavement of God's children," said Elder Scott.

The second type of needless suffering happens when we are hurt by the actions of others, whom the Savior has commanded us to forgive, said Elder Scott.

"Lay the burden at the feet of the Savior"
